Who am I?

I am Miriam, and I write this blog because I like to write and I like to look around at what other people do, and sometimes I even like to craft myself.

I write about crafting because that is actually what I often like to do at night. My hands like to be busy. I have pages and pages of projects written down that I’d like to do, and I think longingly about a time when I could do this all the time.

I think my particular angle on crafting is that I both love design in a general sense, and that I’m also a nerd. I like computers, math and science and I like to combine my creative impulses with them. Like the chemistry in making soap and beer.  And the geometry in quilting and sewing.  And yeah, I also love sci-fi, at least on TV, and in book form I like fantasy.

My favorite things to do, at least right now, are cook, crochet, sew house stuff and paint things. I have been known to make soap, woodburn, saw things, sew non-house stuff, embroider, quilt, make beer, knit, make candles and other things that burn, construct furniture and probably some other stuff I forgot. I like to learn things, but it’s actually rare when I pick up something and just can’t put it down to do some other stuff. I’m not picky as long as I’m doing something I like.

During the day I’m a sort of “accidental techie” as they call it in the non-profit world. Which means that I do technical stuff like information management and webmistressing to further the goal of supporting the place I work for. I’m also a fundraiser. I do this stuff and love it because when I go home at night I feel like I did as much for somebody else today as I did for myself. That’s probably not true all days, but I try my best to use the particular weird collection of skills I have to make a difference for someone else.

If I have the chance one day to combine what I do during the day and night into something, I’ll be as happy as I can get.
